climate change… what else can we do?

All over the globe, apart from the economic crisis, another popular subject is climate change. Climate change leads to the rise of sea levels that will threaten the existence of small islands and also contributes to all kinds of unexpected natural disasters. Not to mention, these bizarre heats that we have been experiencing lately.

In 1997, Kyoto Protocol was adopted in Kyoto Japan. This Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The major feature of the Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, (source : http://unfccc.int/kyoto_protocol/items/2830.php)

It sounds like perfect , but like everything else it is not. The implementation of Kyoto Protocol was stalled due to few significant factors, which includes the inclination of some developed countries to NOT ratify Kyoto Protocol and the lack of funds to help developing world in particular the least developed countries to finance their climate change mitigation and adaptation activities.

The WORLD is dying while we are still busy NEGOTIATING.

The issue of funding and technology transfer is very crucial for the developing countries, they deserved the right to developed, but at the same time, they need funds to help them use a better, cleaner and safer technology for their developments. unfortunately, they just don’t have enough money to do it.

Let us revert back to the world’s population data that I present to you few days back. The world’s population is now at 6831 million people. Let us just assume that half of them are poor people (earning less than USD1 per day). Still there’s about 3831 million people in this world who are doing well. Should all these 3831 million people spare 1 USD per month for a year to help the world address the climate change problems, we will have about USD 45972 millions to help make the world a better place!!!

Hmm, interesting huh? I just wish I have the know how and the resources, to set up this fund and help the world!!!

Howw aa?

Funding is an issue to developing countries that are really.. really dont have money. But developing country like Malaysia… funding is said to be an issue where in actual I personally think it is not.

Most of the time there are other things that restrict the development of green technology (for Kyoto Protocol) in Malaysia, which I agak malas nak list down kat sini. heheheh

Anyway.. its good to know that people like you are concern and aware of this issue. What I mean by ‘people like you’ is someone in the government who has the power and position to voice out.

You sure have a point there. As far as awareness are concerned, I think there are awareness among ‘people like me’. But the implementation part.. is like u said.. another different story. However, with the announcement made by PM in the last Climate Change meeting in Copenhagen, I hope Malaysia will move forward towards green technology.

Anyhow, yes, Malaysia is not really affected by these funding issues, but, Malaysia is only a small country. What about the rest of the world? It needs GLOBAL efforts to address the climate change issues. One country alone wont be able to do anything. Unless that one country is that ONE country… ( you get what i mean? ) he he..

SO bila nak menderma $1 USD ni?
